Application Procedure

No application will be considered until it is complete.  The responsibility rests with the applicant to ensure that all documents (i.e. transcripts, letters of reference, test results) are submitted by the program’s deadline for application.

Completed applications will be evaluated by the program, which makes the admission decision.  The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies sends out offers of admission and handles all administrative aspects of registration. 

For admission to the Master’s program, applicants must possess a four-year degree from an accredited university.  The program requires at least a 70% (B) overall average in the last two full-time years of the undergraduate degree.  Equivalent qualifications may be considered based on the standards of the discipline or profession.  Applicants already holding an M.Sc. degree will also be considered for our M.Sc. program.

For admission to the Doctoral program, applicants must possess a Master’s degree or equivalent from an accredited university and provide evidence of research potential.  The program requires at least a 78% (B+) average in the Master’s degree. 

Although applications are processed centrally, applicants are encouraged to contact individual faculty members to discuss their research interests and possible research projects where applicable.  However, individual faculty members do not directly admit students. 

If you are interested in visiting the department after submitting your application, please contact us to make arrangements.  In many cases, some or all of your travel expenses will be paid for by the program.

Application requirements

The Graduate Studies Application Form need to be completed online. Submit your application electronically here:

   

Make sure that all applicable sections have been filled in. The graduate application will provide UWO with the following:

  • Biographical information

  • Contact information

  • Statement of academic intent

  • Academic background

  • Electronic transcripts from Ontario universities/colleges (see below for more information on transcripts)

  • Referee information (see below for more information on reference letters; additional letters are very helpful)

  • Proficiency in English Scores (if applicable -- see below) (applicant must have the testing service send the score electronically to Western)

  • GRE Test Scores (optional). Though it is optional, applicants who have not completed a degree at a North American University are advised to write the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) in Mathematics (administered by the Educational Testing Service) and have the scores sent to this department.   Western's GRE ID is 0984.

Additional application requirements:

  • Please include a brief statement of your plans for the future and your reasons for wishing to pursue graduate work in Mathematics. In this statement you should indicate the areas of Mathematics in which you are most interested. If you are applying for admission to a Ph.D. program, please be specific as to the area in which you wish to do research (e.g., algebraic topology, complex analysis, etc.). You will be able to submit this statement with your online application form.  You should also mention potential supervisors.

  • In order to facilitate our evaluation of your background in Mathematics, you must provide us with brief outlines of all university Mathematics courses which you have taken. Please include a list of textbooks (giving the name of the authors) that were used for these courses, and an indication of the sections covered. Send this information directly to the address shown at the bottom of this page, preferably electronically.

English Test:

  • It is a requirement of the university that an applicant whose prior experience within an English-speaking environment is limited must write and obtain a suitable score on a test of English such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or the Carleton Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL), or the Michigan English Language Test (MELAB, Toronto location), or the International English Testing System (IELTS). This requirement is part of the application process and must be satisfied before a student can be considered for admission. Arrangements to sit one of these examinations should be made as early as possible, and applicants should arrange to have an official score sent directly to the university (UWO's TOEFL ID is 0984). For more information, see subsection 2.01 "Proficiency in English" in Section 2 "Admission Requirements" of the Calendar which can be found at the web site of our School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Reference Letters:

  • In the application form, you will be required to provide the names and contact information of two referees who can provide detailed information about you. The University will attempt to contact them directly. If unsuccessful, you will be provided with further instructions.

    You are encouraged to ask a third referee to provide a recommendation, as this can help us evaluate your application. The online system only accepts two letters, but a third letter can be sent directly by e-mail or postal mail to the address at the bottom of this page. You can download the reference letter form.

One official* academic transcript from each post-secondary institution attended:

  • Past or current students of The University of Western Ontario do not need to provide transcripts for their academic history at Western. This information will be obtained internally.

  • If you have attended or are currently enrolled at any Ontario university or college other than The University of Western Ontario you MUST use the electronic application process in order to request transcripts. These transcripts will be delivered electronically to each of the programs to which you are applying.

  • All other transcripts must be forwarded in hard copy to Western to complete your application.

*Western considers a transcript official only if it is received in a university envelope that is sealed and signed on the flap by the official person in the office issuing the transcript. If the transcript and degree certificate are not in English, a certified translation must also be included. (Non-English transcripts from institutions within Canada do not require a translation.)

Application Deadline:

We consider applications all year around for admission in September, January, or May, with September being the usual start date, especially for the M.Sc. program.

Applicants for May or September admission are encouraged to apply by February 15.

Applicants for January admission should apply before October 1.

All applicants are automatically considered for financial aid.

International applicants are advised that, once an offer of admission is issued, obtaining a Canadian student visa may take several months.  So International applicants should apply well before the above deadlines.
