CONSTITUTION
OF
WESTERN ONTARIO MATHEMATICS ASSOCIATION

Article 1 - Name

  1. The name of the organization is Western Ontario Mathematics Association, (WOMA), l'Association pour l'Enseignement des Mathématiques de l'Ouest de l'Ontario (AEMOO).

Article 2 - Status

  1. This association is a chapter of the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education (OAME), Association Ontarienne pour l'Enseignement des Mathématiques (AOEM).

Article 3 - Jurisdiction

  1. The jurisdictions represented by WOMA are the educational institutions involved in the teaching and learning of mathematics in the counties of Elgin, Huron, Lambton, Oxford, Middlesex and Perth.

Article 4 - Aims

  1. The aims of this organization are as follows:
    1. to promote excellence in mathematics education; and
    2. to encourage and support the professional growth of teacher candidates and teachers of mathematics;
    3. to encourage and support the participation of students in mathematical endeavors;
    4. to hold a conference in the fall and spring, and
    5. to support and promote OAME.

Article 5 - Membership

  1. Members of WOMA are those members of OAME who have chosen WOMA as their chapter affiliate, or those people who have chosen to pay a fee which entitles them to membership of WOMA.

  2. Membership carries the right to vote, to serve on any committee and to receive any publications published by WOMA.

Article 6 - Organization

  1. The COUNCIL of WOMA consists of:
    1. The EXECUTIVE, which consists of:
      1. President
        -   who shall be chosen from and by the Council for a one-year term.
      2. Past-President
        -   who shall be the previous President. This is a one-year term.
      3. Vice-President
        -   who shall be chosen from and by the Council for a one-year term.
      4. Secretary
        -   who shall be chosen from and by the Council for a minimum one-year term.
      5. Treasurer
        -   who shall be chosen from and by the Council for a minimum one-year term.
      6. OAME Representative
        -   who shall be chosen by the Council from the membership for a three-year term.
      and
    2. the Editor
      -   who shall be chosen by the Council from the membership for a three-year term.
    3. Councillors
      -   who shall be elected from and by the membership, at the annual general meeting, for a two-year term. There should be at least one councillor from each of the counties.

    4. It is the duty of the COUNCIL to:
      1. hold regular meetings for planning purposes;
      2. advise the general membership of the progress of the organization, and
      3. call all regular and special meetings of this organization.

    5. It is the duty of the PRESIDENT to:
      1. preside at general and council meetings;
      2. prepare an agenda for general and council meetings, and
      3. suggest to the Council a chair for the spring conference.

    6. It is the duty of the PAST-PRESIDENT to:
      1. oversee all elections, and
      2. oversee the annual math olympics for the WOMA region.

    7. It is the duty of the VICE-PRESIDENT to:
      1. preside at general and council meetings in the absence of the president;
      2. oversee local nominations for OAME and WOMA awards, and
      3. suggest to the Council a chair for the fall conference.

    8. It is the duty of the SECRETARY to:
      1. record and distribute minutes for general, council and special meetings;
      2. prepare written correspondence pertaining to the business of the organization, and
      3. notify council members of meetings.

    9. It is the duty of the TREASURER to:
      1. prepare an annual budget in consultation with other members of the Council and present it to the Council at the first council meeting of the year;
      2. maintain appropriate financial records and be prepared to apprise the Council of the financial status of WOMA at any time;
      3. prepare an annual financial statement for presentation at the annual general meeting, and
      4. submit an annual financial statement to OAME.

    10. It is the duty of the OAME REPRESENTATIVE to:
      1. be the liaison for WOMA at all OAME council meetings;
      2. apprise the Council of important developments at OAME council meetings, and
      3. arrange for an alternate representative to attend OAME council meetings, if necessary.

    11. It is the duty of the EDITOR to:
      1. review all articles submitted for publication in The Sine Post or its successor;
      2. edit and publish regular issues of The Sine Post, and
      3. assist the Council in choosing a publication committee.

    12. It is the duty of the COUNCILLORS to:
      1. represent their jurisdiction at council meetings, and
      2. support all activities of WOMA.

    13. A quorum for the Council is seven members.

    Article 7 - Committees

    1. Committees will be established by the Council as needed from the membership.

    2. A member of the Council will be appointed to each committee.

    3. All committees will elect a chairperson who will preside over the meetings and a recorder who will keep the minutes of the meetings.

    4. All committees will have a term which begins on the date the committee is appointed and terminates either on the date of the next general meeting or when the work for which the committee was appointed has been completed.

    Article 8 - Meetings

    1. The Council will hold regular meetings.

    2. An annual general meeting of the organization will be held, normally at the fall conference of WOMA. The agenda of the meeting will include:
      1. President's Report
      2. Financial Report
      3. Elections
      4. Amendments to the Constitution
      5. Other Business

    3. Special general meetings will be called as deemed appropriate by the Council. Notice of such meetings must be sent to all members at least two weeks prior to the date of the special general meeting.

    Article 9 - Amendments to the Constitution

    1. Amendments to the Constitution may be proposed and presented to the membership at the annual general meeting. To be considered for adoption, those amendments must be sent to the membership at least thirty days prior to the annual general meeting.

    2. In order to be adopted, a motion to amend the constitution must receive the favourable vote of two-thirds of the members present at the annual general meeting.

    Article 10 - Dissolution Clause

    In the event of dissolution, any monies after debts have been paid, will be forwarded to the OAME Executive Committee.
