98/02/17: Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge 1997

In November of 1997 the second annual Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge competition was written by 3800 senior high school students across Canada. This competition is administered by The Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing at Waterloo University. The results of this contest have just been released. Fifteen of the top nineteen students were from Ontario, as were 63% of the students writing the contest. This reflects most favourably on the standard of Ontario mathematics high school education. Two students from London distinguished themselves. James Thoms of A. B. Lucas Secondary School was in the top three in Western Ontario, and in the top eighty in Canada. Drew Morris of St Thomas Aquinas Secondary School was in the top ten in Western Ontario. Both these students have attended the mathematics competition practice sessions held every Tuesday evening for senior High School students from 6.30 to 8.30p.m. at the University of Western Ontario. These sessions are sponsored by the Mathematics Departments of the University and by the Western Ontario Mathematics Association. There are also sessions for senior High School students held every Monday evening from 6.30 to 8.30 p.m. at Parkside Collegiate in St Thomas. Monthly sessions for grades seven and eight students are held at the University on Saturday mornings from 10.00 a.m. to noon. The next two of these sessions are on 14th February and 14 March.
