Department of Mathematics Awards

Kenneth Cooper Bursary

Awarded to full-time Master’s or Doctoral students currently enrolled in the Department of Mathematics studying applied and/or pure mathematics, based on financial need. This award was established by Kenneth Cooper who received his M.A.T. (Math) degree from Western and enjoyed a 33-year career in math education. He taught math throughout all grades of elementary and high school, as well as conducted workshops for supervisors and parents, and was seconded to teach children of Canadian Forces in Germany, and also Math professor for teacher training at Western Faculty of Education. Kenneth created this bursary to assist math students to aspire to fulfill their goals, and in the process, meet the needs of their fellow human beings.

Value: 3 awards of $1,000, awarded annually.

Henning Rasmussen Bursary

Awarded annually to a full-time Masters or Doctoral student who is registered a program in Mathematics, based on financial need. Established by Ms. Anne Elizabeth Rasmussen in memory of Dr. Henning Rasmussen (BESc'63), an emeritus professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Chair of his department from 1992-97.

Value: 1 award of $1,900, awarded annually.

Mohabat Tarkeshian Award

Awarded to full-time Master's or Doctoral students currently enrolled in a program in Mathematics, based on academic achievement and research merit. The award recognizes the late Mohabat Tarkeshian (PhD'23), a former graduate student at the Department of Mathematics.

Value: 1 award of $1,500, awarded annually.

Timeline: call for applications announced in April of each year.

Faculty of Science Awards

Lumsden Fellowship

Awarded annually to graduate students in any program in the Faculty of Science. Eligibility is based on academic excellence and performance in graduate research. Nominees must be registered in a Ph.D. program and must have completed at least two years of study in any graduate program at Western. The fellowship was made possible by a bequest to Foundation Western by the late Ruth V. Lumsden (BA'79) and Robert O. Lumsden (BA'78).

Value: 1 award of $1,500, awarded annually.

Lumsden Award

Awarded annually to Western Science PhD students who have completed at least two years of study in any graduate program at Western with average course marks at or above 78%, are Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents, and have resided in the Province of Ontario for at least two years. The award is based equally on research excellence and financial need. The award was made possible by a bequest to Foundation Western by the late Ruth V. Lumsden (BA'79) and Robert O. Lumsden (BA'78).

Value: 3 awards of $1,500, awarded annually.

Flight 752 Memorial Scholarship in Engineering & Science

Awarded annually to a full-time Master’s or Doctoral student in the Faculty of Engineering or the Faculty of Science, based on academic achievement and research merit. Preference will be given to an International Student from Iran. The scholarship recognizes the four Western students lost on Flight 752.

Value: 1 award of $1,000, awarded annually (alternating between Science and Engineering).
