Prospective Graduate Students

Overview

The Department of Mathematics at Western offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in pure and applied mathematics. Depending on the degree, students pursue a mix of advanced courses and research towards a thesis and/or publications. We have a low student-faculty ratio ensuring easy access to faculty, and graduate courses tailored to students' interests. Graduate students are individually mentored in the skills needed for careers in mathematics research or mathematically-demanding roles outside academia.

Faculty members

Professors at Western Mathematics maintain highly active research programs and are international leaders in their fields. Research is an integral part of our graduate program. Most students have one faculty member as their primary supervisor, although they can expect interactions with many professors throughout their program. Please see here for more information about our research interests.

Community

Our department has a thriving community of graduate students. We host a large number of active seminar series, including a dedicated graduate seminar series. There is also a very strong graduate community on the Western campus outside of our department.
We are a Principal Sponsoring University of the Fields Institute and have interdisciplinary links with Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, the multi-university high-performance computer network DRAC, and the Ontario Research Centre for Computer Algebra (ORCCA).

Funding

All students who don't have full funding from other sources are offered full funding, which covers tuition and living expenses. In addition, many students are eligible for entrance scholarships on top of the base funding. London, Ontario is a city with a relatively low cost of living.

Admissions

Applications for admission are considered all year round. Applicants for September admission with financial aid should apply by February 1, or as soon as possible after that date. Domestic applicants are encouraged to apply at any time.
